Patent applications under the national procedure are filed directly with the Latvian Patent Office. 115 applications have been filed with the LPO in 2004, including 107 (93%) applications filed by domestic applicants.

Latvia has been a member state of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) since 1993. 30 applications have been filed under this procedure in 2004, including 9 of Latvian origin.

It has been possible to extend European Patents to Latvia since May 1, 1995. The number of applications has been increasing with each year. In 2002 the number of extensions was 4460, in 2003 – 4574, in 2004 – 5734.

The total number of patent applications in 2004 was 5885.
