The expression "industrial designs" covers industrial designs and models. Offices which issue design patents should report their design patent information activities in this series of Annual Technical Reports.
There are 274 documents of title which were granted in 2012. And 270 patents for industrial designs were issued in 2011. Thereby the issue of documents of title increased by 1,5%.
There were 244 industrial design applications in 2012 (123 applications were filed by the national applicants, 121 applications were filed by the foreign applicants) and 257 applications in 2011.
Information is available on paper and CD-ROM carriers.
The main source of information on industrial designs registered in the Republic of Kazakhstan is Industrial Property Official Gazette, which is published monthly in Kazakh and Russian. NIIP also issues the Annual Index to the Official Gazette, the monthly CD and the quarterly scientific and practical magazine "Intellectual property of Kazakhstan".
Data are stored on paper and disks
Bibliographic data for Gazette is generated automatically from the database. Abstracts, full descriptions and claims are scanned, recognized and edited. Texts can be typed in case the recognition is not possible. The Office uses program ABBYY FineReader 7.0 for Optical Character Recognition.
It is expected to develop an open industrial design database register for efficient work with the national and foreign applicants. This database will make it possible to computerize the office management as well as develop an electronic gazette on industrial designs.
The Office uses International Classification for Industrial Designs (Locarno Classification) for classifying industrial designs.
For identification of bibliographic data our Office uses the international INID codes.
When a design application is received all information on it is entered into the national Industrial designs database. The information is updated in the course of office procedures.
Information on registered industrial designs, including bibliographic data, descriptions are stored on CD-ROMs as well as on paper carriers and since 2012 on NIIP official website www.kazpatent.kz.
There is used an on-line automated system for search procedures, which includes information on industrial designs filed with NIIP.
Examiners use following external databases for examination purposes: EAPATIS, esp@cenet, PATENTSCOPE, and open registers of Rospatent, RUPAT and RUPAT_OLD.
Also every year the Ministry of Justice of RK gets the updated database "Invention of the countries of the world".
Automated Information System AIS NIIP automates and simplifies the work, the prosecution of these documents and the organization of electronic documents between Services of the Institute.

Republican patent fund is generated at the Republican Scientific Technical Library (RSTL).
Currently it comprises more than 21 million patent documents from 50 countries and three organizations - WIPO, EPO and EAPO.
At the NIIP's Branch Office Databases Patents of Kazakhstan: Bibliography, Patents of Kazakhstan: Full descriptions and Database Patents of Kazakhstan: Abstracts are generated, which are then recorded on optical disks and distributed around Kazakhstan and abroad.

Also every year by e-mail increases the interaction between users and NIIP. So e-mail of our Office kazpatent@kazpatent.kz received over 3,000 documents and sent more than 400 documents.
NIIP's publications are distributed on the basis of mutual exchange, free of charge as defined in the Law on Print (compulsory distribution), and on a commercial basis.
NIIP carries out mutual exchange of Official Gazettes, Annual Reports and databases with near and far abroad countries and the international organizations. About 886 copies of NIIP's publications were distributed including Journal Intellectual Property of Kazakhstan and Official Gazette in 2012.
672 units, including optical disks with patent information, were received in 2012 from foreign patent offices. The exchange of patent information is carried out on paper as well as optical carriers.
An important event for the promotion of invention and the Patent System is an Annual National Contest on Invention Achievements "Shapagat", which was held on May 24, 2012. The Contest promotes the role of Innovation and Invention in the country, investment promotion and implementation of development in the manufacturing sector. WIPO has established seven awards and EAPO has created Gold medal named after V.I. Blinnikov "For a contribution to invention and patent branch" for Kazakh inventors.
From 20 to 26 June 2012 in Beijing, People's Republic of China by the General Assembly of WIPO in 2011 and the Preparatory Committee held a Diplomatic Conference on the Protection of Audiovisual Performances to adopt an international treaty on the rights of audiovisual performers of their work. The conference was attended by Chairman of the Committee on Intellectual Property Rights Abzal Yestayev.
On May 23, 2012 at the Palace of Independence in Astana within the framework of the V Astana Economic Forum held a panel session "The role of intellectual property in economic development."
Organizers of the session are the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Ministry of Justice, the Committee on Intellectual Property Rights, RSE "National Institute of Intellectual Property."
On April 17-19, 2012 in Astana held an International Seminar "The procedure for submission and consideration of applications for the procedure PCT. New features in the PCT "," Theory and practice of substantive examination in the Eurasian".
On April 11-12, 2012 in Tbilisi held "Inter-Regional Seminar on Technology Transfer", organized by the National Center of Intellectual Property "Sakpatenti" and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
From May 29 to June 1, 2012 at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva (Switzerland) took place on 5 session of the Working Group on PCT. The session was attended by Guldana Ilyassova, department of the examination of inventions, utility models and breeding achievements, RSE "National Institute of Intellectual Property".
On September 13-14 this year in the city of Almaty International Seminar on Collective Management of Rights of text and graphic works, organized by the Committee on Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization and the International Federation Reprographic Rights.
In the period from 4 to 6 of September 2012 in Yalta (Ukraine) held XIX International scientific-practical conference "Actual problems of intellectual property, which was attended by N. Zhaparkul, Deputy Director of the RSE “NIIP”.
From September 18 – 21, 2012 at the headquarters of WIPO in Geneva hosted the 27th session of the Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications (SCT). Kazakhstan was represented by the Deputy Director of RSE "National Institute of Intellectual Property" Saule Zhussupbekova.
On November 22-23, 2012 in Moscow held a regional seminar on "Development of national strategies in the field of intellectual property." The organizers of the event are the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Federal Service for Intellectual Property. Representatives of Kazakhstan were Abzal Yestayev, Chairman of the Committee on Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice, Guldana Ilyassova and Zhanar Omarova - experts of the RSE "National Institute of Intellectual Property".
The Chairman of the Committee on Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Abzal Yestayev attended the fiftieth series of meetings of the Assembly of States members of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), including the Assembly of the Union of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), which was held from 1 to 9 October 2012 in Geneva.
During 2012 26 seminars and "roundtable discussions" were held by the Training Center of the Branch of State Enterprise "National Institute of Intellectual Property".
