Annual Technical Report 2011 on Trademark Information Activities submitted by Israel (CWS/ATR/TM/2011/IL)

I. Evolution of registration activities

Israel acceded to the Madrid protocol on the 1 of June 2010 and since September 2010 the system changed from single class applications to multi-class applications.
Therefore, there is no big change in the number of applications with respect to the previous year but there is an increase of 50% in the number of classes:
In 2010 - 8,517 applications were filed in 10,007 classes.
In 2010 - 8,807 applications were filed (or received through the Madrid system) in 15,513 classes.
There was also an increase of 22% in the number of trademark registrations:
In 2010 - 9109 marks were registered.
In 2011 – 11,162 marks were registered.

II. Matters concerning the generation, reproduction, and distribution of secondary sources of trademark information, i.e., trademark gazettes

Trademark journal is published every month only online, on our web site. The journal is prepared by the trademark department, by its computerized system. The journal includes information about trademark applications accepted for registration, as well as changes in registered trademark details.
Circulars and regulations issued by the Registrar are published in the Israel patent office website.
Full data base of Meta Data concerning trademark applications and registrations is available on our website.
Microsoft WORD, Acrobat Reader and Reporting-Services are used for documents processing.

III. Matters concerning classifying, reclassifying and indexing of trademark information

Israel is a member of the Nice Agreement and therefore classifies the goods and services according the Nice classification. There is no obligation for applicants to use pre-defined terms of the classification. We use Wipo's Goods and Services Manager to check the classification.
We also classify figurative elements according to Vienna classification (even though Israel is not a member of the Vienna Agreement).

IV. Trademark manual search file establishment and upkeep

There is no trademark manual search in the Office.

V. Activities in the field of computerized trademark search systems

Web based application.
The application is fully dealing with all the administrative management of the activities in the trademark department.
Equipment used:
Separate workstation with modem for direct connection to the Internet.

VI. Administration of trademark information products and services available to the public (relating to facilities, e.g., for lodging applications, registering trademarks, assisting clients with search procedures, obtaining official publications and registry extracts)

Search services are given by the department due to a payment of fee. Free search is available for the public using either public computer station at the office or the database appearing on the Internet.

Only registered users that have an electronic signature card can file applications electronically.
E-filing is a very successful service, since almost 57%
of the national applications are filed in this way.

VII. Matters concerning mutual exchange of trademark documentation and information

There is no exchange of trademark information.

VIII. Matters concerning education and training, including technical assistance to developing countries (please indicate URLs of web pages of the Office’s website wherever appropriate)

Training courses are presented from time to time for the examiners or for the users.
The Office receives trainees from developing countries under the WIPO training program.
