Annual Technical Report 2009 on Trademark Information Activities submitted by Armenia (CWS/ATR/TM/2009/AM)

I. Evolution of registration activities

In 2009 1707 applications for registration of trademarks under national procedure were filed with the Intellectual Property Agency (1443 applications for 2008), 1297 applications were registered (1164 for 2008) and 100 applications on trademarks were refused.
3330 notifications were received under Madrid Agreement for international registration of trademarks with indication of Armenia (3289 notifications for 2008).
Decision was made for preliminary refusal of 591 international registrations (383 for 2008).

II. Matters concerning the generation, reproduction, and distribution of secondary sources of trademark information, i.e., trademark gazettes

In 2009, 12 numbers of the Official Bulletins “Industrial Property” were published:
1(57) - 12(68) in CD-ROM format. The Bulletins were published in Armenian, Russian and comprising the official information on 1250 registered trademarks and service marks and trademark registration renewals, trademarks that have been recognized as well-known, registered trade names as well as information on registration of licenses and assignment agreements of patents and trademarks.
Technical and Statistic reports on trademarks and service marks for 2008 have been prepared and presented to the World Intellectual Property Organization.

III. Matters concerning classifying, reclassifying and indexing of trademark information

Upon registration of trademarks, goods and services are classified according to the 9-th edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services (Nice Agreement), and figurative elements of trademarks are classified according to International Classification of Figurative Elements of Marks (Vienna Agreement).
The list of goods and services in the application for registration of trademarks are indicated by the applicant according to ICTS.
Electronic database is available for received applications and registered trademarks.
With the help of electronic base the search on trademarks is practically carried out by all bibliographic data.

IV. Trademark manual search file establishment and upkeep

The Agency kept on works towards update of the foundation of the Armenian Centre for Scientific and Technical Information. The information received from patent offices of foreign countries is forwarded to the Centre.

V. Activities in the field of computerized trademark search systems

The Agency uses the third subversion of “trademark” database designed for examination and record keeping and provides:
- Accumulation of bibliographic data in three languages (Armenian, Russian, English)
- Accumulation and control of fees
- Automation of record keeping
- Outlet of statistic data
- Publication of bibliographic data
- Search of information.
In the reporting period a system for filing the applications on inventions and utility models electronically on the website of the Agency has been created.
Based on the new Law on Trade Names, which entered into force since January 1, 2009 an opportunity for filing the applications on trade names with the Agency electronically was granted to the Central Bank.
Data in Armenian stored in the database server of the Agency have been converted from ASCI into Unicod.
In the reporting period automation and technical re-equipment of the Agency has been continued. The Agency has been re-equipped with 4 computers of type Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 DUO and computer supplementary devices and equipments as well as UPSs. Shortcomings and omissions in the information system of the Agency revealed in the course of its exploitation have been eliminated.
With the aim of introduction of tasks occurred in the result of development changes and updates have been made in the information system of the Agency.
Windows XP”, “Windows Vista” system and Microsoft Office have been installed, service of operation system, installation of software, diagnostics of infected computers and programs have been carried out, and operation failures have been removed.

VI. Administration of trademark information products and services available to the public (relating to facilities, e.g., for lodging applications, registering trademarks, assisting clients with search procedures, obtaining official publications and registry extracts)

Trademarks database of the Agency is available via Internet (http//www.aipa.am). The page contains the following information:

- Trademark registration under the national procedure
- Trademark registration under the international procedure
- Well-known trademarks.

VII. Matters concerning mutual exchange of trademark documentation and information

The Official Bulletins on “Industrial Property”, containing notifications on trademarks are sent free of charge to the Armenian Research Institute of Scientific and Technical Information, Main Library of the National Academy of Sciences, the libraries of the Armenian State University, the State Engineering University of the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian Academy of Agriculture, the State Public Library and to the Book Chamber of Armenia. Official Bulletins have also been sent to the Marzes of the Republic of Armenia free of charge.
According to the preliminary arrangements on patent information exchange, 21 copies of Official Bulletin of the Agency were sent to the Patent offices of foreign countries, as well as to WIPO, EPO and EAPO.
Since 2005 the Agency was given access to the ROMARIN search on trademarks from the WIPO Internet site.
