The expression "industrial designs" covers industrial designs and models. Offices which issue design patents should report their design patent information activities in this series of Annual Technical Reports.

I. Evolution of registration activities

Changes experienced in terms of application filings and grants (registrations) with respect to the previous year

In the year 2002, the number of applications, in total, increased with a rate of 37% with respect to previous year. The increase of domestic applications experienced in the year 2002 was a significant (about 43%) change over the last years.

evolution - Table of figures

Trends or areas experiencing rapid changes with respect to the previous year

The most popular areas of design applications (according to the Locarno Classes) are furnishing (Class 6), packages (Class 9), household goods (Class 7), textile piece goods (Class 5) and clothings (Class 2). Design applications for these areas represented about 70 per cent of total design applications received in the year 2002. These five areas are generally the most demanded areas for design applications in Turkey.

II. Matters concerning the generation, reproduction, and distribution of industrial design documents and of secondary sources of industrial design information, i.e., official gazettes

Publishing, including printing, copying techniques and electronic printing

Information concerning industrial designs is published in monthly Official Bulletins on paper. Documents for these Bulletins are generated manually and sent to the printing office which is an external company. Scanning the images of registered designs and other relevant documents continued in the year 2002, for electronic archiving and documentation purposes. This study is also a part of the project of preparing the electronic data collecting for industrial designs.

Main types of announcements of the Office in the field of industrial design information

Announcement of the Institute for industrial designs is mainly made on the Official Bulletins for Industrial Designs. The bibliographic information concerning designs are published in the Bulletin in the format which is compatible with WIPO standards. In addition to the registrations; corrections, changes in address or names of the holder, transfers, cancellations, legal actions and renewals are published in the Bulletin

III. Matters concerning classifying, reclassifying and indexing of industrial design information according to the classification systems applied

Classification and reclassification activities; Classification system used, e.g., International Classification for Industrial Designs (Locarno Classification), other classification (please indicate whether industrial designs are classified by your Office and, if so, which classification is used)

The classification system used, is the Locarno Classification (7th Ed.). The classification is used for administrative purposes.

Bibliographic data and processing for search purposes

Bibliographic data is stored on a main database. These are; application number, application date, applicant (name, adress, nationality), attorney (if applicable), data for priority claim (if claimed), article, class code, and others.

IV. Search file establishment and upkeep

The registration system does not include novelty search, therefore search file building is not carried out.

V. Activities in the field of computerized search systems for industrial designs

In-house systems (online/offline)

All the information concerning legal status, statistics, images of design applications are stored in an in-house ORACLE database which allows bibliographic search only.

VI. Administration of industrial design services available to the public (relating to facilities, e.g., for lodging applications, registering designs, assisting clients with search procedures, obtaining official publications and registry extracts

General information about application procedure and legal framework concerning industrial designs are available on the Official website of the Institute. Also, administration of registration services are continued to be carried out manually, such as preparation of bulletins or registry extracts.
It is planned to carry out these operations on electronic environment through the implementation of the new software, within the year 2004.

VII. Matters concerning mutual exchange of industrial design documentation and information

The statistical information concerning industrial design activities is forwarded on a regular basis, to WIPO and OHIM. Also, the Official Bulletins are sent to other Offices or Organizations upon request.

VIII. Matters concerning education and training including technical assistance to developing countries

Several seminars and training programs were organized in the year 2002, on the national basis.
