Annual Technical Report 2002 on Trademark Information Activities submitted by Slovenia (SCIT/ATR/TM/2002/SI)

I. Evolution of registration activities

In 2002, the number of national applications filed totalled 1858, a decrease of 4.5 % compared to the previous year, and the number of national registrations 1650, a 3.2 % increase compared to 2001.

An increase has been observed in the number of national applications filed by small and medium-sized enterprises.

Within the framework of the Madrid system (Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol), 137 applications based on Slovenian trademarks were received, 55.7 % more than in 2001. International registrations with effect in Slovenia totalled 6809, a 3,5 % increase compared to 2001.

In 2002, the number of trademarks in force in Slovenia increased from 102,872 in 2001 to 111,331.

II. Matters concerning the generation, reproduction, and distribution of secondary sources of trademark information, i.e., trademark gazettes

Information on trademarks are published bimonthly in the Bulletin of Industrial Property and are also available on SIPO Website (www.uil-sipo.si). The Bulletin as well as other documents are prepared with the Ventura Publisher software.

III. Matters concerning classifying, reclassifying and indexing of trademark information

SIPO uses the Nice Classification, version 8, for the classification of goods and services, and the Vienna Classification, version 5, for figurative elements of marks.

An unofficial translation of the Nice Classification is available to the public on the SIPO website.

IV. Trademark manual search file establishment and upkeep

Manual searches are not carried out any more.

V. Activities in the field of computerized trademark search systems

SIPO continues to carry out searches on the basis of on-line information service (bibliographic and legal status data on national applications and registrations and on international trademarks valid in Slovenia) as well as on the ROMARIN database.

SIPO uses an automation system based on an Alpha server operating under VMS, and a Word Perfect text processing package.

SIPO has also developed a computerized in-house similarity search system for trademark applications and registered trademarks.

Every examiner's PC has access to the Internet.

VI. Administration of trademark services available to the public (relating to facilities, e.g., for lodging applications, registering trademarks, assisting clients with search procedures, obtaining official publications and registry extracts)

SIPO provides the public with free of charge information and general advice on application, examination and registration procedures.

VII. Matters concerning mutual exchange of trademark documentation and information

SIPO sends the Bulletin of Industrial Property to 16 countries.

VIII. Matters concerning education and training including technical assistance to developing countries

SIPO examiners participated in several training courses organized by OHIM and WIPO.

In 2002, SIPO in cooperation with OHIM organized promotion seminars for Slovenian private sector representatives and for members of universities and schools.

SIPO also participated in three fairs.

IX. Other relevant matters
