En los documentos publicados se tiene un máximo de 6 dígitos para el número de serie, y el año es representado en 4 dígitos precediendo al número de serie. Asimismo se adiciona un identificador por el tipo de Derecho de propiedad industrial, siendo estos: "A" para solicitudes de patente con una única publicación, "B" para invenciones (Granted Patents), "C" para certificado de invención, "U" para Modelos de Utilidad, "F" Diseño Industrial y "T" Trazado de circuito. En el IMPI, no existe la figura para Plant Patents, sin embargo, se concede una patente para especies vegetales que han sido modificadas genéticamente.
