SDG Digital Day

On September 17 in New Yok, WIPO Director General Daren Tang made an address at the SDG Digital Day, showcasing the potential of WIPO GREEN to advance SDG13 on climate action.

WIPO created WIPO GREEN – a free, online tech-matching platform to bring those who offer technologies to those who need these technologies, to talk to each other and form partnerships.

said Mr. Tang, who commenced his speech by highlighting the importance of innovation and creativity to bring the SDGs back on track

“WIPO GREEN has grown to become what we believe to be the UN family’s largest tech-matching platform for climate technologies, offering 130,000 technologies from over 140 countries, with one thousand matches already in the bag."

“But WIPO GREEN needs to go beyond matches to marriages”, said Mr. Tang, stressing the importance of not just connecting technology providers with seekers, but also ensuring that these technologies are implemented for real-world impact.

Mr. Tang highlighted how WIPO GREEN is facilitating on-the-ground deployment of climate technologies through its Acceleration Projects in Indonesia, Chile, and China, amongst other countries.

Looking ahead, Mr. Tang announced the forthcoming Green Technology Book, focusing on climate mitigation technologies, which will be launched at COP 28.

WIPO GREEN and its database of needs and green technologies was highlighted as an example of how digital innovation can drive positive global change. The platform’s contribution is acknowledged in several key areas: strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters under SDG 13.1, enhancing global partnerships for sustainable development in alignment with SDG 17.16, and fostering effective cross-sector collaborations as envisioned by SDG 17.17.

Sustainable Development Goals and 2023 SDG Summit

The recognition comes as part of the 2023 SDG Summit, hosted prior to the United Nations General Assembly on September 18-19 in New York and magnifies the essential role that Intellectual Property and innovation play in solving urgent global sustainability issues. The SDGs are a set of 17 global objectives adopted by the UN in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Aimed to be achieved by 2030, these goals address social, economic, and environmental challenges such as poverty, food security, health, and climate action.
