WIPO highlighted the importance of intellectual property for green technologies, particularly China's contributions. WIPO GREEN partnership expanding to 155 with the entry of 5 new partners from China.
The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Global Urban & Rural Development Forum (GURD) held its Opening and Plenary sessions in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, on May 31st, 2024. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) participated at the event, with Director General Daren Tang delivering a keynote address via video as the forum’s Co-Chair.
Director General Daren Tang, in video message, emphasized the importance of intellectual property (IP) as a driving force for green technologies essential in combating climate change. He pointed to a significant 180% increase in climate action-related patents since 2013, with China contributing nearly 40% of global green and low-carbon technology patents.
Despite the surge in green technologies, the practical adoption of them for combating environmental challenges such as climate change is still too slow. WIPO GREEN addresses this adoption gap by connecting global green technology suppliers with those seeking sustainable solutions. Ms. Wang Binying, WIPO Deputy Director General, highlighted the platform’s success in facilitating over 1,000 technology matches and partnering with more than 150 global entities. China’s contribution is substantial, with over 9,500 sustainable technologies listed in the database.
The forum highlighted China’s key role in green technology. WIPO GREEN’s China Acceleration Project, initially piloted in Beijing, will now expand to Shanghai and Chongqing. Mr. Zou Ling, WIPO GREEN China Ambassador, emphasized China’s commitment by highlighting its leadership in photovoltaic technology, wind power, and electric vehicles.
Mr. Peter Oksen provided a detailed introduction to WIPO GREEN’s background, objectives, and achievements, explaining how attendees could access the platform’s resource database. Mr. Xie Hongxing, Director of Bluetech Clean Air Alliance, shared experiences from the WIPO GREEN China City Acceleration Project in Beijing.
The forum fostered collaboration among key stakeholders. Ms. Zhang Xiuwei, from GCL Group, a WIPO GREEN partner, emphasized their commitment to integrating into the global green technology network for global carbon neutrality. Ms. Jia Jing, President of Data Algorithm Electricity Research Institute, stressed the digital economy’s role in shaping green development approaches.
The forum witnessed the expansion of WIPO GREEN with Shanghai and Chongqing joining the Acceleration Project. New WIPO GREEN partners include Huawei, GCL Group, CATL, and the Chengdu IP Exchange Center. With this, WIPO GREEN now has 155 partners.
Ub 2021, WIPO GREEN launched the Chinese Cities Acceleration project with the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office and the Bluetech Clean Air Alliance. The project remains in force.
