As EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan enters its final phase, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was pleased to join the UN Pavilion once again to showcase its work to address global challenges, in particular, through the WIPO GREEN database. The event brought together WIPO GREEN partners to introduce their cutting-edge green technologies while sharing the importance of enabling sustainable innovation to solve global challenges.
The two-day event, entitled "WIPO GREEN: Connect, Expand, and Deploy," took place on October 7 and 8 at the EXPO 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Organized in collaboration with the United Nations Pavilion, the event reaffirmed the value of utilizing intellectual property in advancing sustainable technologies. Showcasing examples from technologies registered in the WIPO GREEN database, participants from around the world had the opportunity to explore and consider innovative alternatives to contribute to overcoming and mitigating the effects of climate change.
At the first panel discussion, WIPO featured speakers from different sectors including a startup, a major construction company, and a patent information consulting enterprise. Each of the panelists brought unique perspectives to the discussion:
Green Science Alliance Co., Ltd., exemplified the startup perspective with its diverse portfolio of environmental technologies including biomass (WIPO GREEN 149184), bioethanol (WIPO GREEN 10753) and quantum dot based organic fertilizers (WIPO GREEN 175850). The company uploads its cutting-edge technologies to the WIPO GREEN database, seeking opportunities for joint research and investment. Recently, Green Science Alliance has been developing black mass based recycled type lithium-ion batteries (WIPO GREEN 171999), in collaboration with a Swiss Innovation Park. While introducing its technology to the audience, the CEO, Dr. Mori stated, “WIPO GREEN is free and easy to use, and is a valuable source with huge potential especially for startups looking to find business partners overseas.”
Kajima Corporation has developed innovative cement (WIPO GREEN 156479) that reduces CO2 emissions and exhibited a dome structure using the cement at the Osaka EXPO. It also introduced a coral restoration project in the Philippines, awarded by the Asia Development Bank (ADB) and conducted jointly with the University of the Philippines and Science Tokyo (WIPO GREEN 175227). The General Manager, Mr. Sakurai emphasized: “Through WIPO GREEN, we want to spread environmentally friendly technologies around the world and contribute to curbing global warming.”
e-Patent, a patent information consulting company, gave an easy-to-understand demonstration of how to use the WIPO GREEN database, sparking the audience's interest. CEO Mr. Nozaki introduced WIPO GREEN as a treasure trove of green technologies and noted that it already contains more than 140,000 data.
At the second panel, three other WIPO GREEN Partners were welcomed to showcase their efforts to promote green technologies across borders.
Mr. Abe, the General Manager of Daikin Industries, introduced Daikin Industries' endeavors on their refrigerant R32 which contributes to curbing global warming compared to their prior refrigerant R410A. The company has pledged not to enforce its listed patents on air conditioning equipment that uses the refrigerant R32 (WIPO GREEN 9594). Mr. Abe emphatically stated that patents can be used not only to exercise exclusive rights but also to spread green technology worldwide.
Meidensha Corporation showcased its circuit breakers (WIPO GREEN 146421) which employ a dry air insulated vacuum circuit breaker system, extinguishing arcs in vacuum. Without SF6 gas, which has a very high global warming potential, the system contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stays reliable in extreme cold. Mr. Watabe from Meidensha’s Intellectual Property Division emphasized his strong desire that WIPO GREEN help spread this technology to more regions and contribute to curbing global warming.
Mr. Minami, Director of the International Cooperation Division at the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC), concluded the event by introducing its activities such as supporting technology transfers and human resource development to conserve global environment in developing countries. He stressed that international technical cooperation would be necessary to solve environmental pollution challenges in these countries.
Over the two days, the event welcomed more than 250 participants of all ages, including the innovators of tomorrow. Their enthusiastic engagement underscored the vital role of supporting green innovation to address global climate change challenges. WIPO remains committed to raising awareness about the importance of intellectual property and innovation to build and secure a greener and more sustainable future for all.
